Access Google’s Keyword planner by going to adwords.google.com. Once there, you will click on “Tools and Analysis” along the bar at the top of the screen, and then “Keyword Planner” from the dropdown menu. Hit “Search for New Keyword and Ad Group Ideas”, this will pull up a variety of options Google offers to discover new Keywords.
The first option, is to simply put a Keyword that exists either in your existing or planned Adwords campaign. Let’s say your existing campaign utilized the keyword “Polar Bears”. You would simply put “Polar Bears” into the “Product or Service” category, hit “Search, and a host of potential Keywords will appear.
From here, there are two tabs available. The first are “Ad Groups” which utilize categories that share similarities to Polar Bears (Endangered, Extinction, etc.) to come up with groups of Keywords related to that category. Depending on your Keyword, this may be a viable option, but realistically utilizing an entire “Ad Group” rather than hand choosing Keywords most applicable to your campaign is not the most focused option.
Instead, go to the “Keyword Ideas” tab and look at the list of Keywords directly applicable to the Keyword you searched for. You can also click the tabs at the top of your generated Keyword list (“Average Monthly Searches”, “Competition Level”, etc.) to sort as you see fit. Looking to really boost your Adwords presence? Try sorting by “Average Monthly Searches” to find Keywords that are sure to reach as many people as possible. On a tight budget? Sort by “Suggested Bid” and look for Low Cost/High Relevancy Keywords to optimize your profits
The second option available, is utilizing the Keyword Planner to scan your website’s content and generate a list of Ad Groups and Keywords from what it finds. To do this, simply go back to the Keyword Planner, select the “Search for new Keyword and Ad Group ideas” tab one more time, and enter your landing page. This will pull up the Ad Groups and Keywords tabs where you can pick and choose what you would like to add to your campaign.
The third and final option is searching for Keywords by your product (or services) category. In most cases, this will be the least viable option of the three as it lacks the higher degree of specificity of the other two, but it is useful in conjunction with the other two as you may pick up a couple of good, relevant Keywords amidst the less relevant ones that the other two options may have missed.
