We stress all the time when discussing SEO and how it is important to realize that it is not all about jamming keywords into description areas or content of your website. Keeping your SEO clean and readable should be your first area of interest when conducting any sort of web marketing related efforts. Websites with great branding and user experience along with well written content respond much better than just web pages with keywords jammed into them.
Here is a great video from Matt Cutts from their Google Webmaster Channel where Matt discusses an important area for new SEO’s to focus a bit less on. Matt also stresses that your search engine optimization efforts should make sense and feel right. Keywords are important but their usage has to make sense within the walls of your website.
The last few weeks some information has slipped out that Google will soon start penalizing websites that conduct a little too much SEO. Now before you take your coffee mug and throw it across the room please understand that too much marketing and too much SEO are two vastly different things. If you have been marketing your business ad branding it using good quality resources and channels you will be 100% safe.
The people that are going to hurt the most are the ones that take a mad science approach to their search engine optimization. Looking at things more from a crazy formula rather than a marketer will surely get you and your website into trouble moving into the future. Google is making changes to enhance the user experience and to also evolve their search tool. They are not making these changes to make your life or mine hell. Rewriting an article 100 times or buying 1000 directory submissions is not quality SEO. Google is making the changes necessary to clean things up.
Did you really think the SEO world would continue the way it has been going forever? Slowly semantic search is making it’s way into Google which will change things even more and now too much junk SEO can get you a Google penalty (well not yet but soon) and I say kudos Google…kudos to you. Personally I am sick of conducting searches only to bump into useless web pages that have been clearly over SEO’d.

We don’t normally pre-announce changes but there is something we are working in the last few months and hope to release it in the next months or few weeks. We are trying to level the playing field a bit. All those people doing, for lack of a better word, over optimization or overly SEO – versus those making great content and great site. We are trying to make GoogleBot smarter, make our relevance better, and we are also looking for those who abuse it, like too many keywords on a page, or exchange way too many links or go well beyond what you normally expect. We have several engineers on my team working on this right now.”
