    I love your site, your newsletter, and your topics.  But I politely disagree.  While I do agree there are far more substandard SEO companies than quality SEO companies, I think it is foolish for anyone to pay huge sums of money to any SEO company not willing to share some of the financial risk, and actually stand behind their work with written performance benchmarks of some kind.

    You asked, “You wouldn’t go to a doctor and ask them if you can pay if you get better would you?”  Maybe not.  But attorneys evaluate risk and take cases they are confident they can win.  They take most of the financial risk on behalf of a client because they did their homework in advance — they KNOW they can help.

    Most SEO companies do not work that way — they take anyone with a credit card including helping competing businesses.  How you can you do right by two people competing for the same keywords and position is beyond me.

    If an attorney thinks they cannot win a case, they are less likely to take it because they know it will mean a loss for them.   Attorneys who work on a contingent fee (the staple of the legal world) are going to work their butts of to win a case.

    I will concede any company that uses blackhat strategies, quick “fixes” that result in short-term gains (isn’t that way PPC is?), and promises you page 1 placement is not worth talking to.  But do not necessarily rule out the legitimate and hard working SEO companies who are slowly changing the standard in an attempt to add some credibility back to an industry that has become notoriously riddled with scam artists.
