Every year, internet firms lose millions due to data breaches, and the figures keep increasing. Even though they aren’t large targets, small firms frequently delude themselves into thinking they’re safe.
The consequences of a data breach can be catastrophic for any company that deals with customer information. Fortunately, though, these dangers are not unbeatable if you take the necessary precautions to safeguard your data.
Start by checking every part of your system that could let attackers in. This means looking at your computers, networks, and how you store data. Pay special attention to places where data might be hiding without your knowledge. When you audit your systems, follow shadow data best practices to identify and secure information that might be stored in unexpected places.
During your security check, look at how your team uses different software and where they save files.
Think of your business data like your house – you need good locks and know who has the keys. Ensure that everyone on the team can only see what they need to do their job. Even with strong passwords, two-factor authentication is a better way to keep your accounts safe.
Set clear rules about how strong passwords should be and how often they should be changed. Everyone needs to know these rules and follow them. Track when and what people access to quickly spot anything that seems wrong.
Your network is like the foundation of your digital security. Install strong firewalls and keep them updated. Split your network into sections so that if one part is compromised, the others stay safe.
If you have Wi-Fi, secure it with strong encryption and change the password regularly.
When people work remotely, make sure they use a VPN to connect. This creates a secure tunnel for their work, keeping sensitive data safe even on public networks.
Losing data can shut down your business just as quickly as stealing it. Set up regular automatic backups – daily for important stuff and weekly for everything else. There should be three copies on-site, off-site, and in the cloud.
Always check your saved copies to make sure they still work. Discovering that your backup failed to function when you need it the most will hurt a lot. If something goes wrong, ensure you can quickly get your systems back up and running.
Cloud services are convenient but need special attention. Check all your security settings and ensure they’re as strict as possible. Use encryption for sensitive data, and regularly review who can access what.
Keep track of which cloud services your team uses and ensure they’re all approved and secure. Sometimes, people start using new services without considering security; stay on top of this to avoid problems.
When dealing with a crisis, take your time to figure out what to do. Create a clear plan for what everyone should do if there’s a security problem. Write down who needs to be contacted, what steps to take first, and how to let customers know if their data is affected.
Make sure everyone knows their role in this plan. Practice your response regularly to act quickly and confidently when something happens.
